KOREM JSC organized an online seminar on cybersecurity of the energy sector of Kazakhstan

On November 5, 2024, JSC «Kazakhstan electricity and power market operator», with the assistance of the United States Energy Association, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Arizona State University, held an online seminar on cybersecurity for the energy sector of Kazakhstan.

The event brought together leading experts, industry professionals and academics to discuss cyber threats and improve the resilience of the country's critical energy infrastructure.

The seminar consisted of two thematic blocks:

  • A study of public utilities in the United States, the architecture of market operations, relevant standards, information exchange and active protection - speaker Mark Johnson-Barbier.
  • Fundamentals of Cybersecurity in Energy Systems, Cybersecurity Challenges in Energy Sector Management, Identification of Cyber Threats and Vulnerabilities in Energy Systems - speaker Dr. Yang Wen.

The speakers of the seminar were: Mark Johnson-Barbier — Senior Chief Architect of Cybersecurity of the Arizona Electricity and Water Supply Company, and Dr. Yang Wen — Associate Professor of the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering of Arizona State University, as well as the chairman of the US-Israel International Consortium for Cybersecurity in the Energy Sector.

The online seminar was attended by specialists in the field of information and operational technologies, as well as information security from JSC «KEGOC», JSC «Astana-Energy», «Akmola Distribution Electricity Grid Company» JSC, «Astanaenergosbyt» JSC, JSC «Astana - Regional Electric Grid Company», JSC «Zhambyl State District Power Plant named after T.I. Baturova», Ust-Kamenogorsk HPP NPP LLP, Shulbinsk HPP NPP LLP and JSC «KOREM».

The seminar became an important platform for strengthening cooperation and knowledge sharing between Kazakhstan and the United States aimed at improving the security of the energy sector.

The next offline session of the seminar is scheduled for the first half of December 2024. At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion of the program course from one of the leading universities in the United States.
