From Science to Production: Kazakhstan and China Launch Joint Hydrogen Technology Center
Astana, April 9 – Today, an official opening ceremony for the Kazakhstan-China Hydrogen Technology Center was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The landmark event was attended by the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerlan Akkenzhenov, the Mayor of Shanghai Gong Zheng, the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek, and the University Rector Zhanseit Tuimebayev.
The establishment of the Center is a direct step towards forming a modern technological ecosystem in the country that unites fundamental science, education, and real industry. During the meeting, Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov emphasized that integration with leading foreign partners would significantly accelerate the pace of the sector's development.
"Hydrogen energy is one of the strategic vectors for the development of our sector. The Concept adopted in 2024 laid the legal and economic foundation for the formation of a new industry aimed at decarbonizing the economy. The new Center should become the main specialized platform for training a new generation of engineers, conducting applied research, and the rapid implementation of innovations into production," noted Yerlan Akkenzhenov.
The signing of a trilateral memorandum between Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Energy China International Corporation became the practical foundation for the Center's operation. The document is aimed at developing large-scale scientific and technical cooperation and the transfer of advanced solutions.
Under the agreement, the parties agreed to conduct joint research, test hydrogen technologies, and launch experimental pilot projects. Special emphasis is placed on the commercialization of scientific discoveries and their integration into industrial projects in Kazakhstan. An active academic exchange of specialists is also envisaged.
The development of hydrogen energy is one of the key elements of the global energy transition. Kazakhstan has significant potential in this area due to its rich resource base and the dynamic growth of the renewable energy sector. Partnership with Chinese technology leaders will strengthen the republic's position in new energy markets and accelerate the introduction of industrial innovations.
