A seminar of the USAID project «Energy of Central Asia» was held at the site of JSC «KOREM»

On April 4, 2024, on the basis of JSC «Kazakhstan Electric Energy and Capacity Market Operator» (hereinafter - KOREM), representatives of the USAID project «Energy of Central Asia» held a seminar and an online presentation on the topic: «Battery energy storage systems for Kazakhstan».

Project «Energy of Central Asia», funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), supports Central Asian countries in the transition to clean energy and achieving renewable energy and energy efficiency goals.

The seminar was held in a hybrid format, it was attended by representatives of: Ministry of Energy of Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC «KEGOC», JSC «Samruk-energy», LLP «Settlement and Financial Center for support of renewable energy sources», RES Associations «Qazaq Green», JSC «KOREM» and other companies of the business community.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a comprehensive overview of Battery energy storage systems (BESS) technologies and their integration into modern energy systems, taking into account the specific requirements of the Kazakh energy sector using international best practices and ideas of international experts.

With an introductory speech, the event was opened by Bayan Abulkairova, Deputy head of the USAID project «Energy of Central Asia». She shared the program and purpose of the seminar, briefly talked about the Project, and also thanked JSC «KOREM» for providing a platform for holding this event.

In turn, Alexey Doronin, Managing Director for Strategy and Development, spoke on behalf of JSC «KOREM». Greeting his colleagues, Alexey Valerievich noted that KOREM, as the organizer of auctions and the settlement center of the balancing market, is also interested in resolving issues related to the integration of storage technology into the energy system and the energy market.

Further, Markus Strasliczka, an international expert on renewable energy sources, USAID «Energy of Central Asia», presented the best practices of integrating BESS technologies into energy systems and the energy market via videoconference.. He introduced the global energy storage markets, focused on lithium-ion battery storage systems and shared the legal and regulatory environment for hybrid RES auctions with BESS.

The seminar was held in an active discussion of the format of the Q&A session.
