New electricity and heating projects to be implemented in Kazakhstan

At the meeting chaired by the Head of State, Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov spoke about measures to ensure stable electricity and heat supply to residents of the Republic, the official website of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports.

Thus, according to him, this year the modernization of power plants with a capacity of over 700 MW in the Atyrau, Karaganda and Pavlodar regions, including the restoration of power unit number 1 at Ekibastuz SDPP-1 capacity of 500 megawatts will be completed.

"The implementation of units 3 and 4 at Ekibastuz SDPP-2, as well as the construction of the Balkhash thermal power plant is planned under the Tariff in Exchange for Investments program," the Prime Minister said.

He added that energy projects of gas generation with a capacity of over 2.3 gigawatts are implemented in the southern regions with completion in 2025-2026, including the commissioning of combined-cycle units at TPP-2 in Almaty and Turkestan.

"This year we started construction of a new cogeneration plant in Kyzylorda and are conducting tender procedures to identify contractors for cogeneration plants in Kokshetau and Semey," Alikhan Smailov noted.

Besides, together with Total Energies (France), Acwa Power (Saudi Arabia) and Masdar (UAE) companies we started implementation of RES projects with total capacity of 3 gigawatts.

As the Head of Government noted, the construction of nuclear power plants and small modular reactors is also being considered, a new model of Single buyer in the electricity market will be introduced to attract investment in the power sector, and under the new bill "On Thermal Power Industry" conditions for improving the reliability of heating will be created.

"An audit of all thermal power plants in the country has been completed. Necessary repairs will be carried out this year," Alikhan Smailov concluded.
